Hey there!
Thanks for reading Californiavore.
If we haven’t already met over a glass of wine or good meal, well, I hope we will have a chance to do so some day. My name is Amy Powell. I’ve spent a lifetime in and around food and wine in just about all corners of the globe. After completing my studies in Hospitality Administration at Cornell University and The French Culinary Institute, I made a living (and paid off my student loans) selling water then tea then wine while writing about food and drinks for some now defunct websites.
Love and life took me to Hong Kong where I landed back in the hotel business, telling the stories of the many Michelin-starred chefs I had the privilege to work with at the Four Seasons Hotel as the Director of Public Relations and Communications. Feeling the call back to the wine world, in 2019 I co-founded TOASST, a subscription wine business with the mission of helping Hongkongers to discover independent wineries and small producers from around the world.
In 2022, it was time to move our family back to the United States. California was calling me home.
Californiavore is my exploration of food and drink in the Golden State. Yes, the weather really is that great and the food is that good, but it is far more diverse than the movies let on. What happens when one of the most diverse populations in America has access to the best produce, meat, and seafood? Deliciousness. And because you cannot talk about California without discussing wine, I’ll also be here each week with ideas on what wines to pair with what dishes, from kale salads to carnitas tacos.
